Ann’s Authentic Fibro Living: Reclaiming Energy and Balance

Certified Fibromyalgia Coach®

 February 20, 2026

This year, I am practicing saying no to activities that drain me and yes to those that nourish my own spirit.

Stepping into 2026

As we step into 2026, I embrace a new chapter of living authentically with fibromyalgia, shedding the guilt and shame that have shadowed my journey since my 2000 car accident. This year, I am committed to honoring my truth and reclaiming my renewed energy and balance.

Understanding Fibromyalgia

Receiving a fibromyalgia diagnosis was both a relief and a revelation. Finally, there was a name for the chronic pain, migraines, and fatigue that plagued me.

Yet, as an invisible illness, fibromyalgia often led to misunderstandings from those around me.

This lack of understanding fostered feelings of guilt and shame, as I masked my pain to meet others' expectations, trying to be the person I was before my accident. People would say, "Maybe you need to exercise more," or they'd call me a hypochondriac and insist I needed to eat better.

Then there have been people in my life who have never asked how I’m feeling or even acknowledged that I have multiple chronic illnesses. At one point, my ex even blamed me for losing my job because I was sick.

When you have fibro and are able to do things one moment and need to rest the next, people doubt that you are even sick. It’s important to educate those around us, helping them understand that while our pain may not be visible, it is very real and impacts our daily lives.

Tools for Energy Management

A couple of times a year, I turn to Tami Stackelhouse’s Dream Week Planner to reassess my energy expenditure. This tool, explored further in episode 44 of the Fibromyalgia Podcast®, Design Your Fibromyalgia Dream Week, empowers me to evaluate and adjust how I allocate my energy, fostering a healthier balance. By identifying energy-draining activities and prioritizing restorative ones, I find a rhythm that supports my well-being.

Consider keeping a daily journal to track your energy levels and activities, which can help you identify patterns and make informed adjustments.

Pacing with The Pomodoro Technique®

The Pomodoro Technique® teaches pacing by setting a timer for work and breaks. This method is especially helpful for those with fibromyalgia and other chronic illnesses, allowing us to incorporate rest into our routine and prevent burnout.

Start small and gradually increase the work intervals. For example, begin with 15 minutes of focused activity followed by a 5- to 10-minute break, and adjust as needed. This technique not only helps in managing energy but also enhances productivity and focus. I’ve found this particularly helpful when doing chores around the house.

Managing energy, boundaries, and daily balance

Setting Boundaries and Honoring Limitations

Living with fibromyalgia day in and day out requires me to be honest about my limitations. Through much trial and error, I've learned the importance of pacing myself to prevent flares.

Growing up in a household where hard work was paramount, I internalized guilt for needing rest.

Now, I understand that setting boundaries is a form of self-care, not weakness. By clearly communicating my needs, I protect my energy and maintain my health.

This year, I am practicing saying no to activities that drain me and yes to those that nourish my own spirit. I know it won’t be easy, but it will be freeing!

Give Yourself the Grace and Compassion You Deserve

In the hustle and bustle of life, it's easy to overlook our own needs and emotions. We often extend kindness to others, yet forget to turn that same compassion inward.

Imagine what you would say to a dear friend who is struggling. Offer those same words of encouragement and support to yourself.

Stop being your harshest critic. Acknowledge that you are doing your best, and that is enough. Embrace your journey with all its ups and downs, recognizing that every step forward is a victory. By giving yourself grace, you create a nurturing environment where you can grow and thrive. My fibro clients have told me that their partner or spouse will say to them, "What would Ann say?" I tell my clients just that: "You are too hard on yourself."

Give yourself credit for all the hard work you are doing. Give yourself grace; you are doing the best you can. Pace yourself and know that little by little, you are making big changes to improve your fibro body and life.” Remember, self-compassion fuels resilience and empowers you to face challenges with strength and dignity.

Creating a Supportive Community

Support and understanding are vital for those living with fibromyalgia. By listening, asking questions, and showing compassion, we can validate the experiences of those with invisible illnesses.

Finding a supportive tribe—people who learn about your health and show up for you—is crucial. They remind you of your worth and advocate for your needs. Engaging with online communities or local support groups can provide invaluable connection and encouragement.

For many of us, our online fibro community — our IFCI Alumni Association — is the only place we can go to find others like us who understand what it's like living in our fibro bodies. Share your experiences and listen to others; together, we can build a network of understanding and support.

Ask for Help

Living with fibromyalgia can be challenging, but you do not have to navigate it alone. If you need support in your daily life, reach out to friends, family, or support groups.

Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

By connecting with others who understand your fibro health journey, you can find empathy and practical advice that make a significant difference. Embrace your personal truth and acknowledge the unique challenges and strengths that come with living with fibromyalgia.

As I have found my truth, you too can reclaim your energy and balance by being open to assistance and understanding. I’ve spent the last several years learning about fibromyalgia and finding my fibro tribe! Remember, reaching out is a step toward empowerment and living authentically. Together, we can support each other in this fibro journey toward renewed vitality and well-being.

Empowerment and Advocacy

In 2026, I encourage you to stop minimizing your daily challenges. Remember who you are and advocate for your fibro mind and body.

This year, embrace the courage to ask for what you need and deserve. Whether it's requesting accommodations at work, seeking emotional support, or asking your doctor for what you really need, advocating for yourself is a powerful step toward living authentically. Stand firm in your needs and educate others about fibromyalgia, paving the way for greater awareness and understanding.
