Quick Read: The Fibro Hierarchy of Needs℠
If you’ve been doing all the “right” things… and still not feeling better — this might explain why:
- You’re not doing it wrong — you’re doing it out of order
- Your body needs different things at different stages
- If your foundation isn’t stable, nothing will stick
- The real key is knowing where you are — and starting there
This is why so many people feel stuck — even when they’re trying their best.
And it’s exactly what makes this a smarter path forward.
If you want a deeper understanding of how this works — and how to apply it to your life — keep reading.
Why What You’re Doing Isn’t Working (Yet)
Have you ever felt like you’re doing all the “right” things to feel better… and it’s still not working?
You’re trying harder.
Being more consistent.
Following all the advice you’ve been given.
…and somehow, you’re still stuck. Maybe even getting worse.
At some point, it starts to feel personal — like maybe there’s something wrong with you.
But here’s the truth:
It’s not that you’re doing the wrong things.
It's that you’re doing the right things — just at the wrong time.
When that happens, it doesn’t just not work — it can actually set you back.
And the hard part is… most people don’t realize that’s what’s happening.
They’re doing their best — but they’re guessing.
Which is why having a way to actually see where you are in the process matters.
Why Order Matters More Than Effort
When it comes to improving your health, there are different kinds of needs — and they build on each other.
You can’t skip ahead and expect things to work.
You can’t build a house on a shaky foundation.
And you can’t take back your life that way either.
That’s what led me to create the Fibro Hierarchy of Needs℠ back in 2020.
This framework helps you understand what your body actually needs first — and what comes next.
And without something like this, it’s really easy to keep doing things that should work… but don’t — simply because they’re not the right fit for where you are.
Because real progress isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing what actually works — in the right order.

The Fibro Hierarchy of Needs — showing how each level builds on the one below it.
The Fibro Hierarchy of Needs℠
Each level supports the one above it.
If something is unstable at the bottom, nothing on top will hold.
And real life isn’t perfectly linear — you might be in different stages in different areas of your life at the same time.
But this gives you a way to understand:
What your body needs most right now
Physical Stability
This is your foundation.
If your body isn’t stable, nothing else will stick.
What this feels like:
- Your energy is unpredictable
- You never know if it’ll be a good day or bad day
- You push… and then crash
- Brain fog makes even simple things hard
This is where many people get stuck.
From the outside, it can look like a consistency problem.
So you’re told to build habits or push harder.
But if your body isn’t stable yet, those things won’t stick.
You can’t out-discipline an unstable body.
What actually helps:
- Improving sleep
- Calming your nervous system
- Having a pain management plan that works
- Living within your real energy budget
The goal here:
Stability — so your body becomes something you can rely on again.
That said, if you’re not sure if this is the stage you’re in, it’s easy to skip ahead — and end up right back here again.
Environmental Stability
Once your body starts to stabilize, the next layer is your environment.
Your life has to support your healing — not work against it.
What this feels like:
- Your schedule is chaotic
- You can’t plan ahead
- You’re fighting for proper care
- You’re worried about work, money, or being believed
Again, this can look like a consistency problem.
But it’s not.
It’s an environment problem.
Trying to build routines in an unstable environment is like building on shifting sand.
If you don’t recognize that this is what’s happening, it can feel like you’re the problem — when it's really your environment.
What actually helps:
- Creating more predictability
- Reducing unnecessary stress
- Building the right medical support
- Simplifying your responsibilities
The goal here:
A life that supports your healing — not one you’re merely surviving.
Belonging and Connection
Fibromyalgia is isolating.
And healing doesn’t happen in isolation.
What this feels like:
- Feeling misunderstood
- Feeling like a burden
- Withdrawing from others
- Feeling alone in your experience
People often get stuck here when they’re pushed toward independence too soon.
But even if things look better on the outside…
You still need support.
What actually helps:
- Building safe, supportive connections
- Feeling seen and validated
- Learning to communicate your needs
- Allowing yourself to receive support
Even one safe connection can make a difference.
Many people don’t realize this is the stage they’re in — so they keep trying to push themselves to be more independent — and just end up feeling even more stuck and even more alone.
The goal here:
To feel supported, understood, and no longer alone.
Self-Trust (Self-Efficacy)
Fibromyalgia has a way of shaking your confidence — in your body and in yourself.
This stage is about rebuilding trust in yourself.
What this feels like:
- Second-guessing your decisions
- Fear of triggering a flare
- Constantly researching but not acting
At this stage, the problem isn’t lack of information.
It’s lack of trust.
And when you’re not sure where you are in the process — it’s almost impossible to feel confident in your decisions.
Every choice starts to feel like a risk.
So you keep looking for more answers — hoping something will finally feel certain.
If you keep relying on outside answers, it can actually hold you back — because you’re still trying to solve it without knowing where you are.
What actually helps:
- Making small, manageable decisions
- Following through in ways your body can handle
- Learning from what happens
- Letting it be imperfect
This is where you rebuild evidence that you can trust yourself again.
The goal here:
To trust your body, your decisions, and your ability to follow through.
Life Beyond Symptom Management (Self-Actualization)
At the top of the hierarchy is expansion.
A life that’s no longer centered around managing symptoms — but around living.
What this feels like:
- You’ve been focused on avoiding flares
- Playing it safe
- Staying in maintenance mode
And while that makes sense earlier on…
At this stage, it can start to hold you back.
What actually helps:
- Making decisions based on what moves you forward
- Reconnecting with what matters most
- Taking small, supported risks
- Building a life that reflects your values
You’re not just managing symptoms anymore — you’re expanding your life.
The Real Reason You're Stuck
If things haven’t been working, this is why:
You’re doing the right things —
just at the wrong time,
without the foundation in place to support them.
And the hard part?
It’s really difficult to see this when you’re in it.
Most people don’t realize which stage they’re in — they just know something isn’t working.
So they keep trying different things — without ever getting clear on what their body actually needs next.
It’s like being lost in a forest.
All you can see are trees.
What you need is a different vantage point —
someone who can help you see what’s actually going on
and guide you to the next step.
Finding Your Next Step
So here’s something to reflect on:
- Where might your actions be mismatched with your needs?
- What have you been trying that doesn’t fit where you are right now?
If you’re thinking:
“I get it… but I still don’t know what to do next…”
You’re not alone.
And you don’t need more information.
You need clarity on where you are — and what actually comes next.

Not Sure What To Focus On Next?
I’ve created a simple guide to help you figure out where you are — and what to focus on next.
It will walk you through each stage of the Fibro Hierarchy of Needs so you can start in the right place — instead of guessing.
Because healing isn’t about doing more.
It’s about doing what actually works — in the right order.
Action Steps
1. Identify where you are right now
2. Choose one focus — not five
3. Adjust your expectations to meet your reality
4. Take one small step this week
If you’re feeling stuck or unsure how to apply this to your own life, that’s exactly what we help people with every day.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
