Map shown reflects the 2025 Fibromyalgia Awareness Proclamations results. Originally shared in Painting the Map Purple for Fibromyalgia Awareness.
This page is updated throughout May as proclamations are issued and verified.
Every May, fibromyalgia awareness shows up in different ways.
One of the most meaningful — and often overlooked — is official state recognition.
When a governor issues a proclamation, it puts fibromyalgia on the record.
It says: this is real, it matters, and it deserves attention.
Below is a current list of 2026 fibromyalgia awareness proclamations by state — reflecting the work of many advocates, organizations, and individuals across the country.
Our role is to verify what has been issued so it’s easy for you to look up your state and share.
Where possible, we include an image of the proclamation so you can see exactly what was issued as part of the official state record.
What Is a Proclamation?
A governor’s proclamation is an official statement issued by a state governor. Proclamations may also be issued by mayors at the city level.
Proclamations can recognize a wide range of topics — from public health and education to historical events, organizations, and awareness campaigns.
Here, we’re focused specifically on proclamations that recognize fibromyalgia, including:
- Fibromyalgia Awareness Day (May 12)
- Fibromyalgia Awareness Month (May)
- Or both
While these proclamations don’t change policy, they're more than "just a piece of paper" — they put fibromyalgia on the official record.

Why Proclamations Matter
Most people with fibromyalgia have had the experience of not being taken seriously.
Being told your labs are normal.
Being told there is nothing more to do.
These proclamations won’t fix that overnight.
But they do move fibromyalgia out of the shadows and into official recognition.
“Governor’s proclamations may seem like small gestures, but they carry important significance… becoming part of the state record and helping raise visibility for fibromyalgia.”
— US Insider, “Raising Fibromyalgia Awareness…”
When something is recognized, it becomes easier to talk about, educate others — and eventually improve care.
It's a small step — but a very real one.
“When fibromyalgia is recognized at the state level, it changes the conversation. It moves it from something invisible… to something acknowledged.”
Still in Progress
Many proclamations are issued throughout the month of May — and some may not be received until June.
If your state is currently listed as Unconfirmed, it may still be updated.
We’ll continue adding confirmed proclamations as they become available.
Action Steps: Help Bring Awareness to Your State
These proclamations don’t happen automatically. They happen because of real people just like you.
Every year begins at zero. That means working each year to reach out to governors and submit requests to bring fibromyalgia into official recognition across the country.
Because these proclamations must be requested by someone who lives in the state, this work depends on many advocates and organizations across the country being willing to step in.
If you’d like help obtaining a proclamation in your state — now or in the future — we’d love to help.
You don’t need advocacy experience — and you don’t have to do it alone.
We can guide you every step of the way — and even help submit the request.
Sometimes the most meaningful change really does start with five minutes and a willingness to raise your hand.
Together, we’ll keep painting the map purple — and building a future where fibromyalgia is recognized, understood, and taken seriously.
